Dominic opened the shop door and slowly walked in. His arms felt to his side he walked over to the coat rack. His leather coat had a few tares in it, claw makes diagonally across the right shoulder blade down; he would need to repair it later. He took off his leather gloves and slipped them into the pockets of his jacket, a stain of blood was on the left palm. Walking over to the back door he unlocked it and walked inside. Surprisingly there was enough food to last for at least a month, but no one could be certain about it. He walked he walked out of the back room and stopped at the counter. He moved his goggles to the top of his head and placed them under his hat. He found an empty box and placed a bloody cooking knife inside of it before pushing it to the side. It had been a rough morning.

As Dominic Set up he wondered what had happened to the town. Since he arrived he had only met the owner of the bakery and seen a few people on the street. However, now he had not seen a soul, well not a living one any way. This made him feel just a little bit scared, but he suspected this would be freaky to anyone. He had dealt with a few of the “inhabitants” already, nothing a few years of culinary school couldn’t help him with. Besides, there were more than enough weapons to deal with any others if they decided to attack him. There were at least five fire extinguishers, mop, broom, flammable cleaning products, alcohol, matches and lighters, and dozens of different knives. So with that he put on some plastic gloves and began to work.

Dominic was beginning to bake fresh bread for the day and beginning to place some of the marinated meat in the rotisseries. The oven was preheated and everything else was set up in the counter. All he could do was waiting for some one to arrive. Feeling bored. He turned on the radio and fiddled with it until he found a signal, there was nothing but static. Looking out the gloomy window, he saw no one coming near. Not letting his guard down completely he sat on one of the stools behind the counter and waited for someone to come in.

Dominic was shocked at the emptiness that was the café. Not even the zombies were ravaging the store for the tantalizing flavors of his food. This made him feel a little depressed but then he remember he would still get paid even if no one came; besides the manager was probably dead by now and the café would then belong to him. He had only met the man once. He seemed normal, not the kind of person that would make a strange radio announcement and lead a legion of zombies. Still, having never been to this town up until now, he didn’t know what to expect from its inhabitants. The town was never very exciting from the start but that what made Dominic move here in the first place, he needed to get away from it all.

The timer beeped as the first batch of bread was finally ready. Dominic placed pot holders on his hands and took out a plethora of pastries. French, sunflower, poppy, and sour dough bread filled the air with the liquor that can only be made from yeast. The muffins were done too, with a medley of assorted fruit and nuts. In addition a few rolls were made for good measure, one of them for his breakfast. Dominic then placed each bread in its respective area and began making himself breakfast, I mean what else could he do. He joked to himself about a zombie attack.

He pulled out a pan, oiled it and turned the burner on. Then he slipped into the small fridge compartment and took out two eggs, a few strips of bacon, Monterey jack cheese, and a mescaline salad box. He then grabbed a plate and dropped the bacon into the pan and watched it sizzle. The crackling and popping reminded him of rainy days at home were he would sit and cook while he parents slept. Slipping the bacon out, he cracked the eggs effortlessly and watched them plop into the pan. He prepared the salad on the plate as a nice spread and sliced open a fresh roll. He then took out a grater and shredded the cheese on top of the eggs. He then forged the bacon with the eggs by placing it on top of the cheese and placing it on the roll. After sprinkling some of the salad on top he gave it a generous helping of hot sauce and closed the sandwich, watching the cheese ooze out the side. He took one bite, it was good. He would finally be able to relax for a while before he would have to check the meat.

Derek ran into the small bakery in the mall. He had never really been in there before, all he knew is that his mom used to buy cookies from there. But now he was in there for a completely different reason. He panted a little because he had jogged there from the school. One of his hands rested on his knee, and his right hand was on his bat, holding him up. Derek was very surprised to find that the light was on, that there was some one in there, and, probably the most surprising, the man in there was baking.

"Uuumm," Derek stammered, "why are you baking at a time like this?" Derek looked at the man with a very confused expression on his face. He then looked over to see if the girl he met in the park had kept up with him, "Dizzy was it? Do you want anything?" Derek took a few more deep breathes as he straightened up to his full height. In the light he realized his white t-shirt was covered in blood, same with his navy blue jeans. "Geez," he murmured to himself.

Dominic looked back at the man with a very dull expression on his face. The man could not be any older than him, maybe even younger. Still he stared at him as if he was an illusion, food still hanging from his lip he took a last bite of his sandwich before looking at the boy more clearly. His shirt and jeans were completely soaked in blood; he was caring a bat which seemed to have bashed something’s skull in. He saw him shout out to someone but there was no reply. He took a deep breath and let out a sigh, exactly when the thermometer in the rotisserie dinged. He turned around and shut off the oven to let the meat rest, it would keep warm. Then he walked over to the box and took out his bloody cooking knife. Then he turned and when into the storage room.

When Dominic came out he was holding two fire extinguishers. Each of them had a long tube with a cone nozzle, increasing their area of its spray, and a strap that makes the bottle easy to carry over a shoulder. He walked over to the other man and placed the extinguishers on one of the small tables. He then placed the knife in one of his belt loops so he could easily access it. He took his jacket from the rack and put it on, taking the leather gloves out of the pocket and doing the same. He fixed his goggles over his eyes and placed one of the straps over his left shoulder. He looked at the man again before speaking.

“It seems like you ran in to trouble out there, you may want this. I found it to be very effective in helping me eradicate the unwanted guests,” said Dominic handing the other fire extinguisher off to the stranger.

Despina's chest felt like it was on fire. Her feet were like heavy little irons, weighing her body down. The guy she had met, Derek, was a lot faster than her and she was forced to slow down, always keeping him within seeing distance in the murky fog surrounding everything. She watched him duck into a shop and picked up her pace as much as she could.

She walked into the store while Derek was being handed an extinguisher by a stranger. "I'm sorry I'm not as fast as you." Her voice was breathy and she could feel tiny beads of sweat on her forehead that she quickly wiped away. Once upon a time she would have said that girls don't sweat but now she didn't even have enough feeling to care. Her body perked up at the wonderful aromas that filled the air. She licked her lips and smiled at the stranger. "It smells so amazing in here."

{sorry i had finals}

Derek took the fire extinguisher with a confused look on his face. He didn't really think it was necessary or that it would be that effective against those freaky creatures. He just looked at the man who had handed it to him. Derek slowly put it down next to him and slowly looked down at the girl next to him, "it's ok," he said as he gave a faint smile. He then looked back at the estranged baker. "I'm Derek by the way, and you said that these thing." he motioned at the fire extinguisher, "work against those things. So you have fought them?" Derek didn't believe the man across from him actualy could have fought off those . . . things.

When Dizzy voiced her opinion about the smells, he too also realized how good it smelled. He hadn't before because the blood from his clothes had overpowered the smell of the food. Derek also realized how hungry he was. He didn't have dinner and it was around nine, plus all he had for lunch was a half of a sandwich. "Do you mind if we stay here a while? And maybe we could have some food," he directed at the baker. He then turned to Dizzy, "you hungry?"

Dominic looked back at the hungry couple, he could hear the rumblings in their stomachs over the eerie silence. He was kinda shocked at the fact that the boy though he had never fought a zombie, if he hadn't he would have been long gone by now. Still company was still better then having to fight any day of the week and decided he should feed these people. He let go of the fire extinguisher, leaning it against the table before speaking to the boy.

"No not really, but I do know that the pressurized," looking at what type of fire extinguisher it was. The label on the side read water. "water woukld be enough to knock down and even drown most of these creatures. Besides it makes an excellent blunt weapon. But enough about this, let me get you guys some food."

Dominic returned to the kitchen the way he had when he first entered into the shop making sure to have his blood knife in the box on the counter to show the boy. He looked back at them from over the counter.

"Killed two this morning, darn this spilled blood over my jacket. But don't let that bother you, just take a seat at the counter and tell me what you want?"
