The Swings (open)

Derek sat on one of the swings with his legs stretched out in front of him. He was obviously way too big for these swings now, but he remembered times when he was able to rock back and forth with ease. The playground was exactly as he remembered it. The swings were all the way in the back, and whoever sat on them could look out and survey the entire playground. That is why he liked the swings so much when he was a little kid.

The jungle gym, slides, monkey bars, they were all still there. The only difference seemed to be his baseball bat resting on one of the slides, and the blood soaked jungle gym. Derek had no clue what was going on in his home town, and he didn't have a portable radio, so he had no idea if there was a new announcement.

Despina's heart was pounding so hard in her chest she felt like it was about to beat its way out of her skin. Her feet slapped against the asphalt as she ran. She couldn't get past the sight of all that blood, pooling from under the creature as its teeth tore through her stepdad's body. No matter how hard she tried she couldn't block out the awful screams he was making. She had grabbed the gun and ran, never looking back at him.
I couldn't have helped him. It would've gotten me too. The thought didn't make her feel any less guilty or ebb the burning, briny tears that continually fell from her eyes, causing her breathing to become more erratic. She had to slow down soon or she'd use up all of her strength but she had to keep going.

The fog pressed in around her and although she had a flashlight she was scared to use it. The monsters would see the beacon and follow the path straight to her. She had to survive. She had to get out of this place.

Up ahead she saw shadows. She knew that she was at the elementary school by now. She was supposed to meet her friends here.....but that was before the radio and the sirens. She wondered, as her pace began to slow considerably, if any of them had made it to the playground. She glanced over into the abyss of grey and saw the outline of the jungle gym, a personal favorite of hers when she was younger. She made her way over, deciding to climb to the top and try to survey her surroundings as best as she could.

She reached out and her hand slipped on the coagulated wet substance. She could smell the copper of blood and she began to gag, wiping her hand on her pants frantically trying to get the stickiness out from between her fingers. She turned and ran from the spot, praying to God that she hadn't alerted the monsters to her presence.

Derek heard footsteps coming closer and closer. He didn't really mind though, it sounded nothing like those creatures. Then they stopped, he looked around. He couldn't really see anything through the fog. Then he saw a figure on the jungle gym. Still staring at the figure he fumbled around for his flashlight. Before he could grasp it, the figure started to run. Derek quickly jumped up from his swing, grabbed his flashlight and baseball bat, and bolted after the figure.

"HEY! HEY!!" He shouted after the person. It seemed to Derek he had never run so fast in his life. He needed to catch that person. Derek didn't have a radio, so he needed to find some one that did. He clicked on his flashlight shinning it at the person. The light bobbed up and down as he ran to catch up. He soon began to draw level with the person, "hey, slow down!" He said out of breath.

Despina's tears were coming faster now. Had that been the blood of her friends? Or children? She gagged again at the though of hacked up kids playing on that jungle gym. She saw the light bobbing in front of her and she heard a man's voice yelling. She was scared to turn around. What if it was another monster killing again?

Despina spun around as she heard the order to slow down. The voice was trying to get her attention. She clicked on her own flashlight, shining the beam over his face. He was tall, with a nice looking face even though it really wasn't the best time for her to notice such a thing. She had to tilt her head up a bit to look into his eyes. Her body visibly relaxed as she realized he wouldn't hurt her and that she wasn't the only one left alive.

"Who are you?" Her voice was raspy from running so much and crying like she had been.

Derek brought his hand up to shield his eyes from the new flashlight that was pointed at him. He looked down at the person holding the flashlight. It was a girl, she about a year or so younger then he. She was also very pretty. Derek smiled when he took her in completely. "I'm Derek," he said as pleasantly as he could considering the situation. "Do you have a radio?" Derek didn't have one, so he needed some one who did. "Anyways, we should try and find some more people. We need to stick together if we want to get out of this alive." Derek looked around, "I don't know if the school is the safest place, but we should find some place to hide."

Despina tried to smile back but it was half-hearted. She knew she looked a mess. "I'm Despina but everyone calls me Dizzy."

She had dark blood stains on her jeans that were half drying, a mix of dirty brown and deep black-red, and her face was streaked with tears and dirt. She felt as pathetic as she looked but he was a real live person and she didn't care what she looked like if he'd stick with her. She ran a hand through her, what had to be, messy hair as he introduced himself, wishing that she had something to tie it back with. Her dainty shoulders slumped when he asked her about a radio.

She shook her head slowly "I was in such a panic...I didn't even think to grab it..." She thought for a moment. "My house is back that way...my stepdad..he..." Her throat started to close off as the bloody image of him filled her mind and she shivered violently. She cleared her throat and continued though her voice was strained. "If the monsters are gone it might be a better place.."

Derek could see she was having some trouble talking about her step-dad. He took that she must have seen him get killed by the monsters. He lifted his hands and put them on her shoulders, and he looked into her eyes, "it's going to be ok, we're going to get out of this." Derek took a deep breathe, he didn't really believe what he just said. But he was trying to make her feel better even if he had lost all hope. "Maybe we should head to the mall. There might be some people still alive there. Plus, even if everyone's dead, we can raid the electronics store. Sound good?"

She could feel herself falling back into the nightmare she had been through when his hands fell on her shoulders, bringing her back to reality. She looked him in the eyes, trying desperately to clear her thoughts from blood and destruction. She nodded when he told her they would get out of it. Even if she didn't really believe it yet it made her feel better. She listened as he told her they should head to the mall and she agreed with him. Plus she didn't know if she was ready to face her home yet.

She smiled a little when he said they'd raid the electronics store. "I can get that portable DVD player I always wanted but never could buy." She reached into her pocket and wrapped her fingers around the handgun she had taken from her house. "I need to get some more bullets."
